Official: Aliou Cissé appointed Libya national team head coach

Aliou Cissé has taken over the helm of the Libyan national football team ( the Mediterranean knights), following his appointment by the Libyan Football Federation.

He signs a two-year deal, with an optional extension should the team qualify for the upcoming tournament

With a wealth of experience and a successful track record with the Teranga Lions, Cissé’s management skills and financial arrangements have led to a two-year contract, contingent upon meeting specific objectives.

Libya has been searching for a way to revive its football culture, particularly the national squad, after various coaches like Nasser Al-Hadhiri, Milutin Sredojevic, Corentin Martins, Javier Clemente, and Faouzi Benzarti have struggled to make a meaningful impact.

The federation, which has faced thirteen years without qualifying for the African Cup of Nations, is eager to start afresh with the employment of a globally recognized coach.

Cissé’s ambition aligns with Libya’s goal for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, as reports reveal Cissé is set to officially assume duties on March 5.

To support Cissé in his efforts, the Libyan officials have made a compelling financial offer, coupled with the understanding that he is expected to oversee the nurturing of emerging talents within the country’s youth football system.

The Libyan Football Federation’s decision to hire Cissé stems not only from his tactical acumen but also from his demonstrated ability to elevate a team’s standing in the international arena.

Under his leadership, Senegal clinched the Africa Cup of Nations title and qualified for the World Cup on two occasions.

As Libya is currently performing well in the qualifying rounds for the 2026 World Cup, there are no immediate concerns about Cissé’s longevity if they fail to qualify.

Nevertheless, Cissé and his squad will be determined to maximize their chances in Group D, where they’re currently placed second with 7 points, one point behind Cameroon on 8.

Libya and Cisse’s next challenge will be to solve the Angola puzzle at home on March 17, before hitting the road to face Cameroon a week later.
