Egypt trip to Young Samurai in U20 World Cup opener
Japan kicked off their FIFA U20 World Cup campaign in style, securing a dominant 2-0 victory over Egypt in their Group A opener at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos on Saturday. The performance demonstrated a strong start for the Asian side, immediately placing them among the early frontrunners in the group.
The match saw the Young Samurai Blue assert control from the outset, dominating possession and limiting Egypt’s opportunities to establish a rhythm. The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute when captain Rion Ichihara calmly converted a penalty kick. Ichihara’s strike came after a foul inside the box, providing a deserved lead for the more enterprising Japanese side.
Japan carried their momentum into the second half, doubling their advantage just three minutes after the restart. Striker Hisatsugu Ishii extended the lead in the 48th minute, punishing some slack defending from the Young Pharaohs with a well-taken finish from inside the box. The early second-half goal effectively sealed the victory and allowed Japan to manage the remainder of the game with confidence.
Egypt’s coach, Osama Nabih, made substitutions in an attempt to spark a comeback, but the Pharaohs struggled to penetrate Japan’s disciplined defense. The defeat leaves the African side with an uphill battle in a tough Group A.
The result puts Japan temporarily atop Group A, though the hosts, Chile, later secured a 2-1 victory over New Zealand in the group’s second fixture.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Group B action saw a tightly contested match where Ukraine claimed a narrow 2-1 victory over South Korea on Saturday night, also marking a winning start to their World Cup journey.
Japan’s next challenge will be against the hosts, Chile, a match that could secure an early spot in the knockout stages for the Young Samurai Blue. Meanwhile, Egypt will look to revive their campaign against New Zealand, a crucial fixture for their hopes of advancing.
