Morocco Stuns Spain with Dream Start at U20 World Cup
The Moroccan U20 national team, affectionately known as the Atlas Cubs, delivered a powerful statement of intent at the FIFA U20 World Cup, securing an impressive 2-0 victory over European heavyweights Spain in their opening Group C fixture.
Played at the historic Julio Martínez Prádanos Stadium in Santiago, the win ends a two-decade-long absence from the tournament for the North Africans and immediately positions them as a serious contender in a fiercely competitive group that also features Brazil and Mexico.
The match was a clash of styles, with Spain dominating possession in the first half but finding no way through a disciplined and resolute Moroccan defense. The Atlas Cubs, however, were not without their own chances, with forwards Yassir Zabiri and Gessime Yassine testing the Spanish goalkeeper Fran González on more than one occasion. Despite the back-and-forth action, the teams went into the halftime break locked in a goalless draw.
The deadlock was dramatically broken just after the restart as Morocco’s patience and opportunistic attack finally paid dividends.
Zabiri and Yassine Strike Gold
In the 54th minute, Yassir Zabiri was the man to break Spanish hearts, latching onto a brilliant through ball, outpacing the defense, and slotting the ball coolly into the net to give Morocco a 1-0 lead.
The Atlas Cubs wasted no time in doubling their advantage. Only four minutes later, in the 58th minute, Gessime Yassine finished off a sublime run and cross from Othmane Maamma, tapping the ball in from close range to make it 2-0. The twin strikes from the Moroccan attack stunned La Rojita and electrified the stadium.
Spain desperately pressed for a comeback in the final half-hour, but the Moroccan defense, anchored by a decisive performance from goalkeeper Yanis Benchaouch, held firm. Spain’s most promising moment came in the 77th minute when they were initially awarded a penalty, only for the decision to be overturned by VAR, further cementing Morocco’s dominance on the day.
A Group C Statement
The comprehensive 2-0 result is an emphatic opening salvo in Group C, which had been widely labeled a “Group of Death.” The three points immediately put Morocco in a strong position ahead of their next two monumental fixtures against five-time champions Brazil and CONCACAF giant Mexico.
For coach Mohamed Ouahbi’s young side, who qualified for the tournament as runners-up in the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, the victory is a huge confidence booster. It’s a testament to the resurgence of Moroccan football at all levels and signals that the Atlas Cubs are ready to build on the nation’s footballing momentum on the global stage.
Spain will now face an uphill battle to recover in the group stage, while Morocco can look forward to their next match with momentum and belief on their side. The Atlas Cubs have delivered a dream start, proving that their solid, patient, and opportunistic approach can yield spectacular results.
