South Africa to Lodge Formal Appeal Against FIFA Sanction on Teboho Mokoena Ineligibility
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed its intention to lodge a formal appeal with the FIFA Appeals Committee following a disciplinary ruling that stripped the national team, Bafana Bafana, of crucial World Cup qualifying points.
The ruling, handed down by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, sanctioned SAFA for fielding midfielder Teboho Mokoena in the FIFA World Cup 2026 preliminary competition match against Lesotho on March 21, 2025.
Mokoena was deemed ineligible due to an accumulated yellow card suspension, in violation of Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the competition regulations.
The Sanction Details
The consequences of the ruling are significant and include:
Match Forfeit: South Africa’s on-field 2-0 victory against Lesotho was declared a 3-0 forfeiture in favour of Lesotho. This resulted in a deduction of three points from Bafana Bafana’s tally in Group C.
Fine: SAFA was ordered to pay a fine of CHF 10,000 (approximately R217,000).
Player Warning: Teboho Mokoena was issued with a warning.
SAFA’s Stance and Grounds for Appeal
SAFA has expressed deep disappointment and strong disagreement with the manner of the decision. In an official statement, the association highlighted that the ruling was “delivered by a single-member panel without reasons” and without affording SAFA an “opportunity to present legal arguments.”
The association has confirmed the following immediate steps:
Requesting Written Reasons: SAFA has formally requested the motivated decision (written reasons) for the judgment, which is a necessary procedural step.
Formal Appeal: SAFA intends to lodge a formal appeal with the FIFA Appeals Committee within the prescribed 10-day period.
SAFA President, Danny Jordaan, apologised to the nation for the “administrative oversight” but maintained the association’s commitment to fighting the ruling to recover the forfeited points.
Impact on World Cup Qualification
The immediate impact of the sanction is a significant blow to South Africa’s 2026 World Cup qualification hopes. The deduction of three points has dramatically reshaped the standings in Group C, dropping Bafana Bafana from their leading position. The forfeiture has now placed them level on points with other contenders, tightening the race considerably with only a few games remaining.
The association has vowed to continue supporting the national team in their final, crucial fixtures against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, urging all South Africans to rally behind Bafana Bafana as the appeal process begins.
