Amajita Deliver Statement Victory with a 5-0 Rout of New Caledonia at the FIFA U-20 World Cup
South Africa’s U-20 Men’s National Team, affectionately known as Amajita, roared back into contention at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, securing a commanding 5-0 victory over tournament debutants New Caledonia in their second Group E match at the Estadio El Teniente.
The emphatic win not only delivered a crucial three points for the African champions after their opening 2-1 loss to France but also provided a vital boost to their goal difference, keeping their hopes of a Round of 16 qualification alive.
Dominance from Start to Finish
From the first whistle, Amajita displayed their intent to dominate, creating numerous opportunities against a spirited but outmatched New Caledonia side. The breakthrough came in the 26th minute when defender Siviwe Nkwali rose to cleverly flick a header into the net.
The floodgates began to open shortly after. In the 34th minute, Shakeel April calmly converted a penalty after an opposition foul on forward Siviwe Magidigidi in the box. Magidigidi, who was brought into the starting line-up for this match, repaid the coach’s faith just before the break, smashing home a third goal in the 44th minute to give South Africa a comfortable 3-0 lead at halftime.
Magidigidi’s Brace Seals the Deal
The second half was a continuation of South Africa’s relentless attack. Siviwe Magidigidi completed his impressive brace just seven minutes after the restart (52nd minute), further extending the lead and effectively sealing the contest. Midfielder Mfundo Vilakazi was instrumental throughout the match, providing key assists and earning the well-deserved Player of the Match award.
The final flourish arrived in the 80th minute when Lazola Maku capped off the performance with a stunning goal of the game—a powerful, well-struck effort from the edge of the area that ripped past the goalkeeper.
Looking Ahead to a Decisive Clash
Coach Raymond Mdaka’s side were highly dominant, registering 32 shots with 13 on target, showcasing their attacking prowess. The 5-0 scoreline marks Amajita’s biggest-ever win at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, a significant historical achievement for the African representatives.
The result puts South Africa level on three points with France in Group E, but with a superior goal difference, positioning them well in the hunt for one of the coveted knockout spots.
Amajita will now turn their focus to their final, and likely most challenging, group stage match against the group leaders, the USA, on Sunday, October 5, where their tournament destiny will be decided. This significant victory ensures the young African stars carry immense momentum into that do-or-die encounter.
