Flying Eagles Snatch Dramatic 3-2 Win Over Saudi Arabia with Stoppage-Time Penalty
The Nigerian Flying Eagles kept their FIFA U-20 World Cup dreams alive in a thrilling fashion, defeating Saudi Arabia 3-2 in a Group F encounter on Thursday night (local time) in Talca. Captain Daniel Bameyi was the hero, coolly converting a penalty deep into stoppage time to secure a vital three points for the West African side.
The match was a rollercoaster from the opening whistle, with Nigeria taking the lead twice only to be pegged back by a determined Saudi Arabian team.
Twice the Lead, Twice Pegged Back
Nigeria’s early pressure paid off in the 10th minute. Midfielder Nasiru Salihu met a well-delivered cross, powering his effort past the Saudi goalkeeper to give the Flying Eagles the lead and register their first goal of the tournament.
The lead, however, was short-lived. In the 21st minute, Saudi Arabia’s Amar Al-Yuhaybi broke through the defense and finished cleverly to level the scores, making it 1-1.
The Flying Eagles responded with renewed energy, and just seven minutes before the break, Amos Ochoche restored Nigeria’s advantage. His opportunistic strike from inside the box capped off an intense first half, sending the Nigerian bench into celebration with a 2-1 lead.
The second half began with another quick response from the Asian champions. Just six minutes after the restart, substitute Talal Haji found space to head home, once again pulling Saudi Arabia level at 2-2.
Bameyi’s Last-Gasp Heroics
As the clock ticked past the 90-minute mark, the contest seemed destined for a frustrating draw for Nigeria, a result that would have severely hampered their chances of advancing. However, in the 94th minute, Nigeria was awarded a crucial penalty after a Saudi defender was judged to have handled the ball in the box.
Stepping up for the biggest kick of his career, captain Daniel Bameyi showed nerves of steel. The defender slotted the ball calmly into the net, sparking pandemonium among the Nigerian players and staff. The 3-2 victory was sealed just moments later as the referee blew the final whistle.
Road to the Knockouts
The dramatic win moves Nigeria to three points in a tightly contested Group F. The result eliminates Saudi Arabia from the competition.
Speaking after the match, Flying Eagles Head Coach Aliyu Zubair praised his team’s determination. “The players made up their minds that they had to go all out for the three points here, and that is what motivated them,” he told reporters. “Now, it’s simple—we have to go all out for the three points against Colombia.”
Nigeria will face group leaders Colombia in their final group match, knowing that another positive result will guarantee their place in the Round of 16.
