Dramatic Late Penalty Secures 1-1 Draw for Nigeria, Seals U-20 World Cup Round of 16 Spot
The Nigerian Flying Eagles booked their ticket to the knockout stage of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Colombia in their final Group F match on Sunday night at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca.
Captain Daniel Bameyi was the hero of the night for Nigeria, calmly converting a late penalty to cancel out Colombia’s second-half lead and ensure the Flying Eagles finished among the best third-placed teams to advance to the Round of 16.
A Test of Resilience
Nigeria, knowing a draw would likely be enough to secure a spot in the next round, started the match brightly, but were repeatedly frustrated by a solid Colombian defense and the impressive goalkeeping of Jordan García. The first half ended goalless, despite a few chances for both sides.
The deadlock was finally broken six minutes into the second half. Colombian forward Kener González found the back of the net in the 51st minute with a sharp finish from a quick counter-attack, putting the Cafeteros up 1-0.
Falling behind spurred the Nigerian team on. Coach Aliyu Zubair’s side intensified their attack, with forwards like Salihu Nasiru and Amos Ochoche coming close to an equalizer. Nigeria was twice denied by the woodwork and several times by a stellar performance from Colombia’s goalkeeper.
Bameyi’s Penalty Heroics
The Flying Eagles’ persistence finally paid off in the dying minutes of the game. In the 84th minute, Nigeria was awarded a penalty after a shot from Tahir Maigana was handled by a Colombian defender in the box.
Stepping up to the spot, just as he did in a previous match, captain Daniel Bameyi held his nerve and sent the Colombian goalkeeper the wrong way, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 86th minute. The late goal secured a vital point for the African side.
Looking Ahead to Argentina
The 1-1 draw sees Colombia top Group F, while Nigeria’s four points from a win, a loss, and a draw were enough to send them through as one of the best four third-placed teams.
The result sets up a highly anticipated Round of 16 clash for the Flying Eagles against the tournament host, Argentina. The match is scheduled for Wednesday in Santiago and is a repeat of their quarter-final encounter in the 2023 edition, which Nigeria won 2-0.
“It wasn’t easy but we stood our ground and were proactive,” said Nigerian coach Aliyu Zubair after the match. “We knew they are physically strong and good on the ball, so we tried to deny them passing lanes… All we wanted was to qualify for the next round and we are not worried about who we have to face.”
