Mora Magic Sends Mexico Through; Morocco Tops Group of Death
The final matches of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Group C delivered high drama on Saturday, with Mexico securing a crucial 1-0 victory over Morocco to seal their spot in the Round of 16. Despite the narrow defeat, the young Atlas Cubs of Morocco finished as the surprise winners of the tournament’s toughest group, which also saw heavyweights Brazil eliminated.
The decisive Group C clash at the Estadio Elías Figueroa Brander saw a cautious first half from both sides. Morocco, having already secured qualification with stunning wins over Spain and Brazil, rotated their squad, but the Mexican side was intent on a win to guarantee their progression
Mora Converts from the Spot
The breakthrough finally came six minutes after the restart. Mexico’s Obed Vargas attempted a shot that was blocked by the arm of Moroccan defender Anas Tajaouart, leading the referee to award a penalty after a VAR review
Stepping up to the spot, 16-year-old phenom Gilberto Mora calmly slotted the ball past the Moroccan goalkeeper in the 51st minute. The goal was Mora’s third of the tournament, cementing his status as one of the competition’s breakout stars, having also scored a brace in the 2-2 draw against Spain.
Morocco pushed for an equalizer, and thought they had found it moments later, but a goal from Younes El Bahraoui was disallowed for offside. Mexico’s defense held firm for the remainder of the match, preserving the clean sheet and securing the vital three points.
The results of the final matchday—Mexico’s 1-0 win and Spain’s concurrent 1-0 victory over Brazil—created the final look of Group.
Morocco topped the group with six points, while Mexico’s win and two earlier draws (against Brazil and Spain) were enough for them to finish second with five points, advancing automatically to the knockout stages. Spain finished third, and with four points, remain in contention to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. The biggest shock of the group was the elimination of five-time champions Brazil, who finished bottom with just one point.
Knockout Stage Preview
Both teams now turn their attention to the Round of 16:
Mexico advances as Group C runner-up and will face a formidable challenge against the tournament’s host nation, Chile, on Tuesday, October 7th.
Morocco, the impressive Group C winners, have earned a match-up against Korea Republic in Rancagua on Thursday, October 9th.
Morocco’s coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, praised his team’s effort despite the loss, noting, “The important thing is that we are through, and we will prepare to be better in the next round.” For Mexico, the victory marks the first time since Canada 2007 that they have finished a U-20 World Cup group stage undefeated. The emergence of young talents like Gilberto Mora has given El Tri strong momentum as they enter the pressure cooker of the knockout rounds.
