Kudus’ Second-Half Strike Seals Ghana’s World Cup Qualification

Mohammed Kudus became the hero for the Black Stars at the Accra Sports stadium by scoring the decisive goal that secured their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ghana defeated Comoros 1-0 in their final Group I fixture, with Kudus’ strike coming in the 47th minute.

How It Happened

The crucial qualifying match was held at the Accra Sports Stadium. The first half was a tense, goalless affair with Ghana dominating possession but struggling to break down a resolute Comoros defense.

The breakthrough came just after the restart. In the 47th minute, Kudus received a square pass from Thomas Partey inside the box and slotted a close-range effort past the Comoros goalkeeper to give Ghana a crucial 1-0 lead. The goal sparked huge celebrations among the expectant crowd and on the field, as it put Ghana in a commanding position to top Group I.

Ghana maintained their composure to see out the victory, securing all three points needed to finish top of the group.

Qualification Confirmation

The 1-0 win over Comoros officially confirmed Ghana’s place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking their fifth appearance at the global tournament, and they’ve done it successively after 2022 where they qualified for Qatar.

Although Kudus’ goal was the winning strike, Ghana’s qualification would have been secured even with a defeat, as their closest rivals, Madagascar, were thrashed 4-1 by Mali in a simultaneous fixture. Ghana finished the qualifying campaign on 25 points, six points clear of second-placed Madagascar.

The victory not only ended Comoros’ recent run of good results against Ghana but also saw the Black Stars confirm their World Cup ticket in style.
