Bafana Bafana Qualify for 2026 World Cup with Emphatic 3-0 Victory over Rwanda
The Bafana Bafana secured their spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in spectacular fashion on Tuesday night, defeating Rwanda 3-0 in their final Group C qualifier at Mbombela Stadium. The victory saw Hugo Broos’ side top the group and end a 16-year wait for a World Cup appearance, having last participated as hosts in 2010.
Going into the final round of matches, Group C was tightly contested, with South Africa needing a win and a favourable result in the match between Nigeria and Benin. The team delivered on their end, starting brightly to settle any nerves.
The opening goal arrived just five minutes into the game when midfielder Thalente Mbatha unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box that the Rwandan goalkeeper could not keep out. The advantage was doubled in the 26th minute by winger Oswin Appollis, who reacted quickly to score the rebound after his initial attempt was blocked following a well-worked team move.
The hosts remained dominant in the second half, and striker Evidence Makgopa sealed the win and the automatic qualification spot in the 72nd minute, stooping low to head home a corner-kick delivered by the impressive Appollis.
The final whistle sparked scenes of jubilation across South Africa, as the nation celebrated the end of a long and often frustrating qualifying drought. The result meant that despite being docked three points earlier in the campaign for fielding an ineligible player, Bafana Bafana topped the group.
In the other crucial Group C fixture, Nigeria delivered the required assistance, thrashing Benin 4-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Victor Osimhen. This result saw Nigeria finish second and secure a place in the African playoffs, while South Africa claimed the coveted direct qualification spot.
The 2026 World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will mark South Africa’s first World Cup appearance through qualification since 2002, heralding a new era for the Bafana Bafana squad. Coach Hugo Broos and his primarily locally-based team have been hailed for their resilience and commitment throughout the campaign.
