Senegal Secures 2026 World Cup Spot with Decisive 4-0 Victory Over Mauritania
The Lions of Teranga, Senegal, roared their way to a fourth FIFA World Cup appearance on Tuesday night, dispatching neighbours Mauritania with a commanding 4-0 win in their final Group B qualifier at the Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade.
Star striker Sadio Mané was the catalyst for the emphatic victory, netting a crucial brace to settle the nerves of the home crowd and propel the 2021 African champions to the top of their qualifying group.
The veteran forward broke the deadlock just before half-time, curling in a brilliant free-kick in the 45th minute to give Senegal a 1-0 lead. He wasted no time after the restart, grabbing his second three minutes into the second half to double the advantage.
Further strikes from Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye in the 64th minute and substitute Habib Diallo in the 85th minute sealed the comprehensive win for Pape Thiaw’s side. The result was never truly in doubt, allowing Senegal to comfortably finish top of Group B with 24 points, two points clear of second-placed Democratic Republic of Congo, who now advance to the play-off round.
The victory confirms Senegal’s spot at the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They join fellow African powerhouses, including Ivory Coast and South Africa, who also secured their automatic tickets on the final day of the group stage qualifiers.
For Mauritania, the loss wrapped up an unsuccessful qualifying campaign, leaving them in fifth place in Group B. Senegal, meanwhile, will now turn their attention to the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
