Anguissa, Choupo-Moting Out; Onana Doubtful ahead of Congo clash

Cameroon’s preparation for the FIFA 2026 World Cup Playoff Semi-Final against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been severely compromised by a wave of significant withdrawals and uncertainties. As the crucial match rapidly approaches, the national team, the Indomitable Lions, will be forced to compete without several of its key figures—a daunting challenge for coach Marc Brys.

The most resounding announcement concerns the confirmed absences of two foundational players in the squad: Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

The absence of André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Série À October player of the month, is a particularly severe blow to the heart of Cameroon’s midfield. The central player is an essential component of the team’s balance, known for his impressive volume of play, his ability to manage the transition between defense and attack, and his physical power in duels. His vision and capacity to dictate the tempo will be sorely missed, forcing the staff to quickly find a new midfield formula where  Martin Hongla and Arthur Avom may be called upon to intensify their roles.

In attack, the withdrawal of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, author of 18 MLS goals this season removes a valuable option for experience and as a target man. Although the forward was sometimes used in rotation, his ability to hold up the ball with his back to goal and link up play with wingers was an important weapon. His absence will place increased pressure on Karl Etta Eyong and Vincent Aboubakar to shoulder the primary offensive responsibility and leadership within the opponent’s penalty area.

In parallel with these confirmed absences, uncertainty looms over the health status of the goalkeeper and captain, André Onana. The shot-stopper is currently being placed under observation by the medical staff, fueling fears of a potential third high-profile absence. Onana is not only the team’s technical last line of defense but also a crucial vocal leader.

Faced with these last-minute constraints, the Indomitable Lions’ technical staff is grappling with a serious tactical challenge. The duel against the DRC, already a major test of competitiveness, now becomes an examination of the squad’s depth and the team’s mental resilience. Cameroon will have to dig deep into its resources to secure a spot in the playoff final despite these setbacks.
