Benin Finalizes 28-Man Squad for AFCON 2025

Gernot Rohr has officially confirmed his final 28-man roster for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. The “Cheetahs” arrive at the tournament looking to capitalize on their recent upward trajectory, which saw them finish level on points with Nigeria in the World Cup qualifiers. Rohr has opted for a squad that prioritizes defensive continuity and the physical presence of his European-based core.

The Defensive Wall

The selection is built on a foundation of experienced defenders. The central partnership of Mohamed Tijani and Olivier Verdon remains the bedrock of the backline, supported by the leadership of veterans David Kiki and Yohan Roche. The defensive unit also features Rachid Moumini, Rodrigue Fassinou, Tamimou Ouorou, Samadou Attidjikou, and the highly anticipated newcomer Charlemagne Azongnitodé, who earned his place following a standout season in Finland.

In goal, South Africa-based Marcel Dandjinou is expected to start as the number one, with long-time servant Saturnin Allagbé providing vital cover alongside Serge Obassa.

Tactical Midfield and Injury Woes

The midfield is designed around the tireless work rate of Sessi D’Almeida and the rising talent of Dodo Dokou. They are joined by Hassane Imourane, Mattéo Ahlinvi, Gislain Ahoudo, Rodrigue Kossi, and the creative Junior Olaitan. Jodel Dossou, though now playing in the lower tiers of French football, has been included for his set-piece expertise and wealth of international experience.

However, the squad has been hampered by significant injuries. Most notably, Andreas Hountondji and the newly naturalized Brazilian attacker Felipe Santos were forced to withdraw after failing to recover in time.

Mounié’s Charge in Attack

The striking department is led by captain Steve Mounié, who has fought off his own fitness concerns to lead the line. He is supported by FC Lorient’s Tosin Aiyegun and the uncapped, Swedish-born Adam Akimey. The attacking options are rounded out by Rodolfo Aloko, Romaric Amoussou, Razack Rachidou, and Olatoundji Tessilimi, giving Rohr various tactical permutations as they prepare for a grueling group stage.
