AFCON 2025: Tournament guide for Mali

Long considered a powerhouse of African youth football, Mali has translated that pedigree into a senior side that is almost always a threat but frequently falls just short of glory. As they enter the 2025 edition in Morocco, the Eagles arrive with a squad that many believe is their most balanced and tactically mature in years.

A History of Consistent Excellence

Mali’s relationship with the Africa Cup of Nations is one of longevity and frustrating “so close” moments. They made a debut in 1972, reaching the final only to lose a 3–2 thriller to Congo. Since then, they have become one of the most consistent performers on the continent. In total, Mali is making its 14th appearance at the tournament.

Their most successful modern era came between 2012 and 2013, when they secured back-to-back bronze medals. While they have reached the semi-finals on six different occasions, that elusive gold medal remains the final frontier. In 2025, they aim to shed their reputation as the “perpetual contenders” and finally be crowned kings of Africa.

The Unbeaten Road to Morocco

The Eagles’ qualification journey for the 2025 tournament was a masterclass in efficiency and defensive dominance. Competing in Group I, Mali faced off against Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, and Eswatini. They finished at the summit of the group with an impressive unbeaten record of four wins and two draws.

Most notably, their defense was nearly impenetrable, conceding only a single goal across the entire six-match campaign. They began with a steady 1–1 draw against Mozambique before finding their rhythm with crucial victories, including a dominant 6–0 win over Eswatini to close out the group. This qualifying run has sent a clear message: Mali is no longer just a collection of talented individuals, but a disciplined and cohesive unit.

The Architect: Tom Saintfiet

Mali is led by  Tom Saintfiet. The Belgian tactician is a connaisseur in African football management, having led Gambia to a historic quarter-final in 2021.

Coaching Style: Saintfiet is a pragmatist who prioritizes tactical discipline and collective shape. He is famous for building teams that are incredibly difficult to break down, often using a compact 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 system. He doesn’t rely on individual brilliance alone; instead, he demands that his stars work within a rigid defensive structure. However, with the talent available in this Mali squad, he has integrated a more “vertical” attacking style, utilizing the pace of his wingers to exploit spaces on the counter-attack.

The Stars to Watch

The Malian squad is anchored by Yves Bissouma of Tottenham Hotspur, who provides the world-class composure and ball-retention skills that allow the team to control the tempo of any game. Alongside him in the engine room is RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara, whose box-to-box energy and ability to break lines with his passing make him the perfect link between defense and attack.

In the final third, the creative burden falls on the shoulders of Kamory Doumbia, a rising star known for his “clutch” goals and creative flair. Defensively, the team is led by the veteran captain Hamari Traoré, whose experience in top-flight European football ensures that the Eagles remain organized even under the intense pressure of a tournament setting.
