Etta Eyong makes history as Pagou’s experiment blows out Gabon

Karl Etta Eyong struck in the first half against Gabon as Cameroon made a statement win in Agadir against their neighbors.

He became the fastest goalscorer (6th minute) for Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations since Roger Milla against Egypt on March 14, 1988 (5th minute).

In a high-stakes Group F opener at the Grand Stade d’Agadir, Cameroon secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over their neighbors, handing coach David Pagou a dream competitive debut and ending a long-standing hoodoo against the Panthers.

The Early Sting

Coach Pagou didn’t shy away from big calls, handing debuts to the defensive pairing of Che Malone and Samuel Kotto. The gamble paid dividends.

Within 6 minutes, Ecuele Manga header, Bryan Mbeumo turned provider, threading a needle to find Karl Etta Eyong. The forward kept his cool, sliding a low finish through the legs of Marius Mbamba to spark wild celebrations among the Cameroonian faithful.

The Aubameyang Factor

Gabon’s Thierry Mouyouma initially left his “Big Two”—Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mario Lemina—on the bench following their late arrival to camp. However, trailing and reeling from Cameroon’s dominance, Mouyouma pulled the trigger on a double substitution after just 33 minutes.

The introduction of the superstars shifted the gravity of the game. Sensing the change in tide, Pagou showed tactical maturity, immediately pivoting his side to a 4-2-3-1 to weather the incoming storm.

A Game of Inches

The match became a frantic end-to-end affair. Danny Namaso was a constant menace for Cameroon, nearly doubling the lead with a header that shaved the post. At the other end, Denis Bouanga almost punished a Cameroonian defensive lapse, his snapshot whistling just wide of the upright.

The second half was a story of “what might have been” for both sides:

Baptiste Tchamadeu found himself unmarked in the box after a sublime Mbeumo pass but sent his effort into the stands.

Devis Epassy proved his worth in the 71st minute, charging down Omva Oyono to preserve the clean sheet.

Frank Magri thought he’d sealed it in the 78th minute, only to see his deflected strike kiss the crossbar and fly over.

Lions Sit Tall

In a frantic final ten minutes, Cameroon retreated into a disciplined defensive shell, successfully suffocating Gabon’s creative outlets.

The whistle blew to confirm a landmark 1-0 win. With three points in the bag, the Indomitable Lions now sit alongside holders Côte d’Ivoire at the summit of Group F. For Cameroon, this wasn’t just a win; it was a statement of intent.
