Amad Diallo Strikes as Holders Côte d’Ivoire Launch AFCON Defense with Gritty Win
The defending champions, Côte d’Ivoire, began their AFCON 2025 title defense with a gritty 1-0 victory over a resilient Mozambique side.
Played under rainy conditions at the Stade de Marrakech, the match was a test of patience for the “Elephants,” who dominated possession throughout but struggled to break down a well-organized Mozambican defense during a scoreless first half.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 49th minute through Amad Diallo. The Manchester United winger showed exceptional composure after a deep cross from Guela Doué was expertly cushioned into his path by captain Franck Kessié.
Diallo kept his cool to slot a low, right-footed finish into the bottom corner, sending the Ivorian fans into celebration. While the Ivorians continued to press for a second—with young talent Yan Diomandé and veteran Wilfried Zaha both coming close—they were unable to extend their lead, leading to a tense final few minutes.
Mozambique, known as “Os Mambas,” refused to back down and nearly orchestrated a dramatic late equalizer. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, a powerful strike from the edge of the box forced a spectacular fingertip save from Ivorian goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.
The final whistle confirmed a vital three points for Côte d’Ivoire, placing them level with Cameroon at the top of Group F. This result sets the stage for a massive clash between the two African giants on December 28th to decide who will take early control of the group.
