“I Can’t Have Mercy”: Broos Casts Sentiment Aside as Bafana Prepare for Cameroon Showdown

– The man who scripted Cameroon’s 2017 AFCON Cinderella story is now ready to tear up the script.

–  Hugo Broos has vowed to show ‘no mercy’ as he looks to end the Indomitable Lions’ stay in Morocco

The stage is set in Rabat for a massive Round of 16 clash at AFCON 2025. South Africa and Cameroon, two giants of the continent with a storied history, will face off on Sunday at the Al Medina Stadium. For Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos,  it is a reunion that he must come out on top.

Logistics and Mind Games

Despite the emotional weight of the fixture, Broos is far from pleased with the pre-match arrangements. The coach expressed his frustration over the logistical hurdles facing his squad in Morocco.

“I am not happy,” Broos stated firmly. “We are currently forty-five minutes away from our training pitch, just as we were yesterday. Furthermore, I have to train on the same pitch as our opponents, Cameroon. I am not sure why this is allowed to happen.”

A Clash of History: Bafana’s Surprising Edge

While Cameroon is often viewed as the powerhouse of African football, historical data suggests Bafana Bafana are their bogey team. In their nine previous meetings, South Africa has dominated the record books: South Africa has won 3, drawn 5 and lost one.

Notably, Cameroon has never beaten South Africa in a competitive match. Their only victory over Bafana came in a friendly 33 years ago. For Broos, however, past records and personal sentiment must be set aside.

“This is a special game for me. From the team I coached, only Christian Bassogog remains , but all my players still hold a special place in my heart,” said Broos. “However, I cannot show Cameroon mercy. This is a young, talented squad that looks very different from the qualifiers. We must play at our absolute best if we want to beat them.”

The Midfield Battle: Mokoena vs. Baleba

The heart of the match will likely be decided in the midfield, where Bafana’s midfield general Teboho Mokoena faces his toughest test yet. He goes head-to-head with Brighton & Hove Albion’s rising star Carlos Baleba, who has been described as one of Africa’s shining lights in the Premier League, after making the team of the group stage.

Despite Baleba’s growing reputation as a world-class talent, Mokoena remains undaunted. The Sundowns man is focused on the collective mission rather than individual reputations.

“Cameroon is going to be a tough opponent, but we look forward to the challenge,” Mokoena said. “I am concerned about what we do as a team, not as individuals. It’s our goal to win the AFCON. It would be a wonderful present to give the coach a fitting send-off—even though he isn’t usually one for gifts.”

Tournament Ambitions

South Africa enters the knockout stage with momentum, aiming to better their third-place finish from the previous edition. Broos acknowledged that the path is harder this time around, noting that the “shocks” of the group stages in 2023 haven’t happened this time, which shows consistency.

“Nobody expected Cameroon to come this far, but they have shown great mentality,” Broos concluded. “They may be the surprise of this year’s AFCON, but we are here to achieve our best level.”
