Gabon Government Reinstates National Team and Ends Aubameyang Ban Following AFCON Crisis

The Gabonese government has officially lifted its suspension of the national team and reinstated star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The reversal, announced on January 12, 2026, brings an end to a standoff that began earlier this month following Gabon’s exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Official Reinstatement

The Gabonese Football Federation (FEGAFOOT) confirmed that it received a formal letter from the Minister of Sports, Paul Ulrich Kessany, withdrawing the punitive measures against the Panthers. The directive effectively restores the team to active status and clears the way for senior players Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga to return to international duty. The ministry cited the urgency of upcoming deadlines, specifically the draw for the 2027 AFCON, as a primary driver for the decision.

Context: The AFCON 2025 Crisis

The initial suspension was a radical response to what the government called a disgraceful performance during the group stages in Morocco. Gabon failed to secure a single point, losing all three matches against Cameroon, Mozambique, and Ivory Coast. In the immediate aftermath, acting Sports Minister Simplice-Désiré Mamboula dissolved the coaching staff and indefinitely suspended team activities, claiming the performance betrayed national values.

Aubameyang, who missed the final group game due to a thigh injury and returned early to Marseille for treatment, was singled out for exclusion. He responded sharply on social media at the time, arguing that the team’s failures were rooted in structural issues rather than individual players.

The Road to Recovery

While the government has backed down on the suspension—likely to avoid severe sanctions from FIFA regarding political interference—the road ahead remains complex. Although the players are back, the coaching staff remains dissolved. FEGAFOOT has been tasked with presenting a plan for a new technical team to guide the Panthers in upcoming competitions.  President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has promised strong and structural decisions to reform the governance of national sports, aiming to address the lack of resources and poor management that have plagued the team.

With this resolution, Aubameyang, now 36, is expected to continue his veteran leadership role as Gabon attempts to rebuild its identity and prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2027 AFCON cycle.
