Trezeguet Double Keeps Al Ahly Top of Group B
Al Ahly secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Tanzania’s Young Africans in their CAF Champions League Group B encounter. The match, which served as a tie-breaker for the top spot in the group, saw the Egyptian giants rely on the clinical finishing of Mahmoud Trezeguet Hassan to dismantle a resilient Yanga side.
Young Africans started with surprising aggression, utilizing the speed of Allan Okello and Maxi Nzengeli to test the Red Devils’ defensive line. For much of the first half, the Tanzanian champions looked capable of causing an upset, frequently disrupting Al Ahly’s rhythm in midfield and forcing goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir into several acrobatic saves.
The momentum shifted decisively in the final moments of the first half. In the third minute of stoppage time, Mohamed Hany delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the heart of the box, where Trezeguet rose above his markers to head the ball home. This goal completely altered the complexion of the match, forcing Yanga to abandon their defensive shape in search of an equalizer after the interval.
The second half saw Al Ahly lean into their experience, absorbing pressure and waiting for the opportune moment to strike on the counter-attack. While Yanga coach Pedro Gonçalves introduced Pacôme Zouzoua to inject more creativity into his midfield, the Egyptian defense remained impenetrable. The definitive blow came in the 75th minute when Emam Ashour found Trezeguet on the edge of the area. The winger took one touch to set himself before unleashing a powerful strike into the top corner, effectively ending any hopes of a Tanzanian comeback.
This result represents a significant turning point for Group B. Al Ahly now moves into sole possession of first place with seven points and a healthy goal difference. Meanwhile, the defeat marks the end of a long unbeaten streak for Young Africans, who must now focus on defending their second-place position against the likes of AS FAR Rabat and JS Kabylie in the coming weeks.
