Sundowns Held by Resilient Al Hilal in Pretoria Thriller

Mamelodi Sundowns were forced to share the spoils with a resilient Al Hilal Omdurman following a dramatic 2–2 draw in Pretoria. While the result ensures the South African giants remain at the summit of the standings, the visitors from Sudan will depart with immense credit after a display of grit earned them a vital point on the road.

In the 15th minute, Abdelrazig Omer clinicaly finished a rapid counter-attack to silence the home crowd and hand the visitors a surprise lead. However, the Brazilians responded with trademark composure, restoring parity just seven minutes later. Arthur Sales found the back of the net in the 22nd minute after excellent interplay with Nuno Santos, ensuring the sides remained deadlocked as they retreated for the interval.

Sundowns emerged for the second half with heightened intensity, dictating the tempo and eventually seizing the advantage in the 64th minute. Teboho Mokoena showcased his technical prowess by drilling a low strike into the bottom corner following a precise setup from Themba “Tashreeq” Matthews. Yet, Al Hilal refused to buckle under the pressure. Their persistence was rewarded in the 71st minute when Omer ghosted into the area to convert an Alioune Coulibaly pass, securing his brace and dragging his side level once more.

The closing stages were characterized by rising tensions and a frantic search for a winner. Al Hilal’s defensive resolve was tested further when Emmanuel Flomo was dismissed for violent conduct in the 85th minute, leaving the visitors to navigate seven minutes of stoppage time with ten men. Despite a late onslaught and clear-cut opportunities for Brayan Léon and Kutlwano Letlhaku, the Sudanese side held firm until the final whistle. While Omer claimed Player of the Match honors with a standout 8.5 rating, Sundowns’ Mokoena and Sales were equally influential in a result that keeps both teams firmly in contention at the top of Group C.
