Nairobi United’s Continental Woes Deepen After Azam FC Comeback

Nairobi United’s difficult debut in the CAF Confederation Cup continued on Sunday as they fell 2-1 to Tanzania’s Azam FC at Nyayo Stadium. Despite a promising start, the Kenyan side suffered their third consecutive group-stage defeat, leaving them at the bottom of Group B without a point.

Early Lead Frittered Away

The match started with a spark for the hosts when Duncan Omalla fired United into a 13th-minute lead, sending a brilliant strike into the top corner. However, the celebrations were short-lived. Just four minutes later, a defensive lapse by goalkeeper Ernest Mohammed allowed Azam’s Jephte Kitambala to equalize into an empty net.

The “Ice Cream Makers” controlled much of the first half, with United’s defense—led by Yusuf Mainge and Lennox Ogutu—performing heroics to keep the score level at the break.

A Tale of Two Halves

The second half saw the highly anticipated debut of former Gor Mahia star Benson Omalla, who joined his brother Duncan on the pitch after coming off the bench. Despite the tactical shift, United struggled to break down a disciplined Azam side managed by Florent Ibenge.

The decisive moment arrived in the 78th minute through a stroke of misfortune for the hosts. A cross from Azam substitute Nuru Twalib struck the woodwork and Ricocheted off keeper Mohammed for an own goal, sealing the victory for the Tanzanian visitors.

Group B Standings & Path Ahead

Both teams entered the match desperate for points after losing their opening fixtures to Wydad AC and AS Maniema Union. With this result, Azam rejuvenates their campaign while Nairobi United faces a mountain to climb.
