Stade Malien Surge Clear in Group D After Punishing Petro Errors

Stade Malien seized undisputed control of Group D in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League on Sunday, delivering a composed 2–0 victory over Petro de Luanda in Bamako. By capitalizing on critical defensive lapses from their opponents, the Malian side moved to seven points at the halfway stage of the competition, establishing a vital two-point lead at the top of the standings.

The opening period was a tactical and cagey affair, with the hosts dictating the tempo against a disciplined Petro defense. The Angolan champions opted to sit deep and absorb pressure, a strategy that largely frustrated Stade Malien despite their patient probing. The best chance of the half fell to Daouda Coulibaly, but Petro goalkeeper Nuno Marques produced a brave point-blank save to ensure the teams went into the locker rooms on level terms.

However, the deadlock was shattered just five minutes after the restart when a catastrophic error from Marques gifted Stade Malien the lead. A poorly executed goal kick was intercepted in midfield by captain Mamadou Traoré, who immediately released Taddeus Nkeng. From distance, Nkeng unleashed a low drive that caught the stranded goalkeeper off guard, sparking celebrations in the stands.

The visitors’ situation went from bad to worse only moments later as they attempted to play out from the back. Under intense pressure, left-back Eddie Afonso slipped at a crucial moment, allowing Ousmane “Kalaba” Coulibaly to seize possession and drive toward the touchline. His precise low cross found the unmarked Traoré, who emphatically hammered the ball into the roof of the net to double the advantage.

Although Petro de Luanda attempted to fight their way back into the contest, their finishing lacked the necessary clinical edge. Substitute Jó Paciência missed a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit in the 75th minute, but the Stade Malien defense remained organized and resolute to see out the victory. This result leaves Petro in third place with four points, while elsewhere in the group, Espérance de Tunis kept the pressure on the leaders with a narrow 1–0 win over Simba SC.
