CAF Skyrockets Champions League prize money To $6 Million

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has announced a substantial increase in prize money for the continent’s premier interclub competitions.

The new financial structure, which takes effect for the 2025/26 season, sees a $2 million increase in the winner’s purse for both the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Unprecedented Growth

Under the leadership of Dr. Motsepe, CAF has maintained a steady trajectory of revaluing African football. Since 2021, financial rewards have more than doubled, reflecting a commitment to making African clubs more competitive and financially sustainable.

The winner of the CAF Champions League will now receive $6 million, a 50% jump from the previous $4 million. Even more impressive is the growth in the CAF Confederation Cup, where the prize money for the champion has doubled from $2 million to $4 million.

Beyond the Winners: A Focus on Solidarity

In addition to the top-tier rewards, CAF has significantly increased support for clubs across all levels. Total payments and solidarity distributions to African clubs will now exceed $42 million per season. Notably, clubs eliminated in the preliminary stages will now receive $100,000, doubling the $50,000 support introduced last season to help offset the high costs of travel and logistics across the continent.

Building Commercial Value

“The decision to increase prize money is part of a broader strategy to strengthen club football and improve the commercial value of our competitions,” CAF stated on Monday.

The announcement comes as African clubs prepare for the final stages of the current season, with the Champions League final scheduled for mid-May. This financial injection is expected to help clubs invest more in infrastructure, youth academies, and talent retention—key pillars for the long-term growth of the African game.
