Zambo Anguissa Announces Retirement From International Football

André-Frank Zambo Anguissa has announced his decision to retire from international football, bringing an end to a career that saw him become one of the most prominent figures in Cameroon’s midfield.

The midfielder made the announcement in a statement published on his Instagram account.

After several years with the indomitable Lions, the erstwhile Fulham and Marseille man has chosen to step away for good. It is a decision that comes with emotion, but also with immense pride in having represented his country at the highest level, per his own account.

“I have made the decision to end my international career,” Zambo Anguissa wrote, before reflecting on the significance of wearing the national team shirt. For the midfielder, representing Cameroon was the fulfilment of a childhood dream.

Over the years, Zambo Anguissa established himself a mainstay in the middle of the park, playing alongside several generations of Indomitable Lions and featuring at some of African and world football’s biggest stages.

His experience, physical presence and technical quality made him a regular and influential figure in the national team. He experienced the highs and lows that come with international football, representing Cameroon at 3 Africa Cup of Nations campaigns as well as at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

His importance to the team extended beyond his performances on the pitch. Over time, he became one of the senior figures in a side that went through periods of transition, even acting as the skipper in the absence of Vincent Aboubakar at the 2023 AFCON in Côté d’Ivoire.

In his farewell message, Zambo Anguissa thanked the Cameroon Football Federation, the various coaches he worked with, his teammates and everyone who accompanied him throughout his international journey.

His strongest tribute, though, was reserved for the Cameroonian supporters.

“Thank you to the Cameroonian people. Thank you for your passion, your love and your support, in victory as well as in the most difficult moments,” he wrote.

It was a recognition of the role the supporters played throughout his years in the green, red and yellow of Cameroon.

As he closes this chapter of his career, Zambo Anguissa leaves behind a message marked by pride and emotions.

“I leave the national team with a lot of emotion and pride,” he said, before ending with a line that captures his enduring connection to the Indomitable Lions:

“Indomitable Lion one day, Indomitable Lion always. Thank you, my Cameroon.”

Anguissa made 67 appearances for five goals and lasted 9 years with the national team since his debut under Hugo Broos in March 2017. Aged only 30, Anguissa will now aim to rediscover his spark that helped Napoli lift the Scudetto in 2023 and 2025.
