Coach Agbor Leads Warriors FC to Continental Stage via Orange Cup
The Cameroonian adds a second major cup title to his growing legacy after guiding Black Man Warrior FC to another triumph.
Coach Agbor Ako, 60, has further cemented his reputation as one of Cameroon’s most accomplished football minds after leading Liberia’s Black Man Warrior FC to a successful defense of the Orange Cup title, securing continental football for the second consecutive season.
The Monrovia-based club edged Shaita FC 2-1 in a fiercely contested final at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex on Sunday, continuing a remarkable football story in Liberia.
For a club founded only in 2020 and competing in Liberia’s second division just two seasons ago, the achievement represents another giant leap forward. The victory guarantees Black Man Warrior FC a place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup despite their struggles in the domestic league.
The final itself was a showcase of determination and resilience. Black Man Warrior FC struck first inside ten minutes when defender Fully Massaquoi capitalized on poor distribution from the Shaita FC goalkeeper, sending a bouncing effort into the net to hand his side an early advantage.
Shaita FC, who have already secured promotion to Liberia’s First Division for next season, responded in the 25th minute. David Pascal produced a superb athletic volley from a well-delivered cross, restoring parity and ensuring the teams went into halftime level.
With the contest hanging delicately in the balance, it was Black Man Warrior FC who found the decisive breakthrough. Forward Yamah Morris timed his run perfectly to get behind the Shaita defense in the 60th minute before calmly slotting home the winning goal.
The strike sparked celebrations among players and supporters alike as the final whistle confirmed another chapter in the club’s meteoric rise.
For Coach Agbor, the triumph carries huge significance. The Orange Cup success marks the second major domestic cup title of his coaching career after previously lifting the Cameroon Cup in 2022 with Cotonsport of Garoua. Another notable club achievement prior to arriving in Liberia was serving as co-coach alongside Gabriel Haman at the group stage of the CAF Champions League in 2022.
The gaffer’s know-how goes deep. Between 2016 and 2018, Agbor served as assistant coach of Cameroon’s Intermediate Lions, the national team that competes in the African Nations Championship (CHAN), further enhancing his credentials among Africa’s coaching fraternity.
His experience has been evident throughout Black Man Warrior FC’s cup campaign.
Despite enduring a difficult league season, Agbor successfully inspired his players to rise above their domestic struggles and deliver when it mattered most. The Orange Cup salvages the campaign and also ensures another opportunity to showcase the club on the continental stage.
As the celebrations continue in Monrovia, attention will soon turn to the CAF Confederation Cup, where Black Man Warrior FC will once again carry Liberia’s hopes onto the continental stage.
