World Cup Draw: Teranga Lions Ready To Roar In Group A

The draw for the 2022 World Cup was made on Friday in Doha, Qatar, with 5 African countries including Senegal, knowing their opponents.

Sadio Mane sent his country to the World Cup at the expense of Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah as Senegal beat Egypt 3-1 in a penalty shootout on Tuesday after their playoff ended 1-1 on aggregate.

Senegal’s victory, with Mane hitting the winning spot-kick, was a repeat of the African Cup of Nations final last month when Mane clinched a first major title for his country by also scoring the winning penalty in a shootout against the Egyptians.

After ejecting Egypt from the race, Senegal dropped into the group of the host country, Qatar.

The Teranga Lions will also have to rumble against the Netherlands and Ecuador.

This will be Senegal’s third world cup finals, with their best ever performance in the tourney coming in 2002, when they made the quarter finals.

Senegal were eliminated from the 2018 FIFA World Cup, after losing 0-1 to Colombia in the final Group H game.

The Teranga Lions who were the only remaining African side in the tournament, was the first side in history to be eliminated from the World Cup based on their fair play points.

Senegal, ended their campaign level on points with Japan, who also lost their final game 0-1 to Poland, but were eliminated because they had more yellow cards than the Japanese.

Now in Qatar, Aliou Cisse and co will be looking to emulate their 2002 run.
