Qatar 2022: Iran Leaves It Late Against 10-Man Wales

Iran scored two goals in added time to win 2-0 against the Welsh on Friday. After added-on time, Iran snatched a deserved victory against Wales at the Al Rayyan stadium in Group B of the 2022 World Cup.

Two late goals from Roozbeh Cheshmi ( 90th + 8), on the back of a strike from Ramin Rezeian (90th + 11), allowed the Iranians to break through the Welsh and relaunch their competition.

Before the later stages, Iran struggled to sink their teeth in the beef for long minutes.

The opposing goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey made a couple of saves before becoming the first player to be expelled at this World Cup finals, as he was given a matching order at the 84th minute.

Before he was sent off,
Hennessey was between the sticks when Sardar Azmoun and Ali Gholizadeh struck the post on the same sequence of play at the 54th minute.

Earlier, the Iran scored a goal that was chalked off. Gholizadeh’s celebration was cut short – rightly – by the VAR at the 15th minute.

Carlos Quieroz and his men showed that they needed the victory more with 21 shots in total, which comes to give the team back confidence after a 6-2 defeat to England in the opening game.

With three points, Iran are second after USA’s stalemate (0-0) against the Three Lions on Friday.

In their final meeting against the USA on Tuesday evening, Iran needs to avoid defeat and hope England doesn’t lose against Wales.

As for the Welsh, bottom with a point, they are on the edge before facing the English in the third pool match. Nothing less than a victory will be able to take Wales to the R16.
