CHAN 2023: Uganda Backs Out

The Uganda Cranes have flagged red and decided to withdraw from the African Nations Championship scheduled for Algeria next year, Football256 reports.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations president, Moses Magogo Hasim is less than impressed as he took to his tweeter handle in the early hours Monday Dec. 12 to explain.

“Like for the U23, we are left with no further option but to withdraw the Uganda Cranes from CHAN finals because @mofpedU (Ministry of Finance) has not provided the funds as appropriated by @Parliament_Ug (Parliament of Uganda).”

In October, Financial challenges forced Uganda to withdraw their national U-23 team, Uganda Kobs from the TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, what Magogo was trying to make allusion to, in his tweet.

He continued: “Sorry for the players and coaches who qualified the team but it is the moment to face the reality.

“The sanctions to Uganda will affect the future if we don’t take the hard decision now,” the FUFA boss ended.

The CHAN finals in Algeria was set to be Uganda’s 6th after 5 previous participations. The only tourney missed by the Uganda Cranes was the inaugural tournament hosted by Cote D’Ivoire in 2009.
