U20 AFCON: Congo Defeat Debutants South Sudan 2-1

Congo trembled until the end, but victory finally came at the end. Congo’s start to the TotalEnergies U20 Africa cup of Nations in group B saw the Devils win against South Sudan (2-1).

Victory that came under duress against an opponent who bravely played, but lacked good decisions in the final third for their first match in his history in the competition.

Onlookers had to wait until the cusp of halftime (45+1) before Déo Bassinga opened scoring. Upon return from the locker room, the Congolese were relentless before doubling the tally thanks to a penalty from Prince Sousou who took wrong footed Godwill Simon at the 63rd minute. By virtue of pushing, the South Sudanese were rewarded and halved deficit at the 83rd through Paul Jawa at the 83rd minute.

The score didn’t change any further and Congo could smile home with three points which allowed them to join Uganda, winners of their game against the Central African Republic, at the top of group B with three points. On their part, South Sudan are already back to the wall before their next two games.
