Angola Appoints AFCON-Winner Aliou Cissé

The Angolan Football Federation officially signaled a new chapter for the national team on Thursday by announcing the appointment of Aliou Cissé as head coach. The 50-year-old Senegalese tactician, a legendary figure in African football, arrives in Luanda on the heels of a brief ten-match stint with Libya. Cissé has committed to a four-year contract, a duration that underscores the federation’s desire for stability and long-term structural growth.

During a ceremony held in the capital city to unveil the new manager, Federation President Alves Simões described the day as a moment of profound renewal. He emphasized that Cissé’s arrival is intended to rekindle hope among fans and reaffirm the nation’s ambition on the continental stage. Simões further noted that the appointment reflects a firm commitment to innovation and competence, with the ultimate goal of building a squad that can consistently evoke national pride.

Cissé brings an elite level of experience to the Palancas Negras, having spent nearly a decade at the helm of the Senegalese national team. During his tenure from 2015 to 2024, he transformed the Lions of Teranga into a dominant force, leading them to their maiden Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021 after a narrow runner-up finish in 2019. His leadership qualities were evident long before his coaching career began, as he famously captained the Senegal squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup.

The task ahead for Cissé involves elevating an Angolan side that has struggled to find consistency in recent major tournaments. Although the team successfully qualified for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, their previous finals campaign was a source of frustration. Despite finishing third in Group B, they were unable to secure a spot in the knockout rounds, losing out to Tanzania on the tie-breaker of goals scored.

Currently ranked 89th in the world, Angola is looking to transcend a historical ceiling that has seen them reach the AFCON quarter-finals only twice, in 2008 and 2010. By securing a coach of Cissé’s caliber, the federation hopes to replicate the success of their 2006 World Cup qualification and establish the Black Antelopes as a permanent powerhouse in African football.
