Angola Shakes Up Coaching Staff: Pedro Gonçalves Out as AFCON Looms

In a surprising move, the Angolan Football Federation has parted ways with head coach Pedro Gonçalves, just three months before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off. This decision comes after a string of disappointing results, culminating in a 0-1 loss to Libya on September 4.

The Reason Behind the Split

The defeat to Libya seemed to be the final straw for Gonçalves, who had been at the helm since August 15, 2019. During his tenure, he led Angola in 55 matches, securing 18 wins, 22 draws, and 15 losses. Despite his efforts, the team struggled to find consistency, ultimately landing in fourth place in Group D with 10 points.

AFCON 2025 Awaits

Angola’s focus now shifts to the upcoming AFCON tournament, where they’ll face tough competition in Group B alongside South Africa on December 22, Zimbabwe on December 26, and Egypt on December 29.

What’s Next for Angola?

With Gonçalves out, the Angolan Football Federation will need to appoint a new coach to lead the team in the AFCON 2025. Given the short timeframe, the new coach will have to act quickly to prepare the team for the challenges ahead.

Current Group D Standings

Angola currently sits fourth in Group D. Cape Verde leads the group with 19 points, followed by Cameroon with 15 points, and Libya with 14 points. Angola trails Cameroon by 5 points and Libya by 4 points, making it nearly impossible to catch up to the top spot. Even the second spot, which could lead to a playoff, seems out of reach.

The road ahead won’t be easy for Angola. With a new coach at the helm, the Palancas Negras would look to pull off a surprise in the AFCON 2025.
