Cameroon 8-0 Gambia: Lionesses Set One Foot In AWCON Finals With Biggest Ever Win
The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon have one foot in the AWCON 2022 finals in Morocco, after an unerring 8-0 win against the Gambia.
It is the biggest ever win for the Lionesses, breaking the 8-1 record against Mozambique on September 13, 2018 in Canada.
As early as the second minute, Cameroon took the lead with a neat finish through the 20 year old Kameni Flora, who tapped in from a Nchout Ajara cross.
After her assist, Ajara nearly got one for herself at the 12th minute, but she was denied by the upright. She wasn’t to be denied throughout anyways. Three minutes after hitting the post, Ajara won for herself a free kick and stepped up to score an absolute delight that beat goalkeeper Ceesay.
At the rate at which is was going, every other Lionesses forward wanted goals for themselves. Bella Rose put a gloss on the scoreline at the 27th minute, with a goal of her own.
Two minutes later, Meffoumetou charged down the right and put a nicely weighted pass for Flora Kamani who scored her brace at the 29th minute.
The Aboudi-Ajara connection nearly gifted the Lionesses a fifth goal at the 37th minute. Aboudi got the beating of Fatou the left-back but a perfectly timed cross was missed by Nchout.
Mariana Cessay was substituted after a series of injuries, leaving her place for Matty Manga on the second half whistle (halftime).
At the 56th minute, a straight cross from Aboudi was headed into the net by Falone Meffoumetou, who was having a game of her life with an assist already registered, earlier on.
8 minutes after the hour mark, the Scorpion Queens shot themselves in the foot as second half substitute Gladys Tatiana benefited from a defensive howler to side foot the ball past goalkeeper Matty Manga.
As the Queen Scorpions looked to pull at least a goal back, cracks opened in defense. A long and hopeful ball from Mambo Lambo met Genevieve Ngo, who beat the keeper to it, before scoring on the turn (74).
Genevieve Ngo Mbeleck got a well deserved brace, the team’s 8th, at the 86th minute to cap what was indeed a supreme show for the Lionesses.
Cameroon plays the reversed fixture on February 22nd in Gambia, but it only seems a formality for Lionesses.
