Elye Wahi Ruled Out of Ivory Coast’s Canada Trip After Visa Setback
Ivory Coast striker Elye Wahi will not travel with the Elephants to Canada for their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup fixture after failing to secure the administrative clearance required to enter the country, the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) has confirmed.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, the federation sought to clarify reports circulating about the international forward, stressing that it has not been officially notified of any judicial or administrative proceedings involving the player.
“To date, the FIF has not been officially informed of any judicial or administrative procedure concerning Elye Wahi,” the statement reads.
The federation also reaffirmed its support for the striker during what it described as a particularly delicate period, insisting that Wahi remains an important member of the national team.
“The FIF offers its full support to the player and reiterates its confidence in him. Elye Wahi remains an important element of the Côte d’Ivoire national team,” the federation added.
Despite that backing, the governing body confirmed that Wahi will be unable to join the squad for their trip to Canada after the necessary administrative authorizations for his entry into Canadian territory could not be obtained in time, therefore forcing him out of Saturday’s clash against Germany in Toronto.
As a result, the 23-year-old will remain in the United States while awaiting the team’s return.
The federation did not provide further details on the reasons behind the visa issue but said it would continue to monitor the situation closely and communicate any official developments as they arise.
Wahi’s absence is a blow for the Elephants as they continue their World Cup campaign. The forward, known for his pace and direct attacking style, offers another dimension to Ivory Coast’s frontline and was expected to play a role in the team’s next group-stage fixture. He is the second reputable case after Thomas Partey to be denied a Canadian visa.
For now, however, the 2015 and 2023 African champions must continue without one of their attacking options, while FIF works behind the scenes in the hope of resolving the administrative impasse. Côté d’Ivoire started their World Cup campaign in fine form, registering a 1-0 win over Ecuador.
