Hilal continue impressive CAF Champions league start with latest victory against Mazembe
Jean-Claude Girumugisha’s added-time goal secured a dramatic 2-1 victory for Sudan’s Al Hilal over TP Mazembe in the CAF Champions League on Sunday, preserving their perfect group-stage record.
Captain Mohamed Abdelrahman gave Al Hilal the lead with a 22nd-minute penalty in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, where the club has been forced to play home matches due to the ongoing civil war in Sudan. Mazembe equalised with a stunning strike from Oscar Kabwit in the 64th minute, but Girumugisha’s late heroics sealed the win.
Al Hilal are now the only team in the competition with six points after two matches, topping Group A ahead of Mouloudia Alger (4 points) and leaving TP Mazembe (1 point) and Young Africans (0 points) trailing.
TP Mazembe endured a tumultuous lead-up to the match, with travel delays due to technical faults in their chartered flight. Arriving just 15 hours before kick-off, their preparations were limited to a warm-up, and they couldn’t prevent defeat despite a spirited performance.
In Group D, Egypt’s Pyramids climbed to the top on goal difference after a goalless draw against Djoliba in Bamako. Despite dominating the competition with 18 goals in previous matches, Pyramids failed to find the net for the first time this season.
Al Hilal’s resilience and determination continue to shine, as they navigate the challenges of displacement while aiming for CAF Champions League glory.
