Mbappé Breaks French Record as France Punish Wasteful Senegal in World Cup Opener

Kylian Mbappé became France’s all-time leading goalscorer as Les Bleus overcame a spirited Senegal side 3-1 in their opening Group I match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday.

The scoreline flattered France, who spent much of the first half chasing a Senegal team that looked determined to repeat the giant-killing exploits that stunned the football world when the Lions of Teranga defeated France in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup.

Senegal created the clearer chances before the break and could easily have gone into halftime with a lead. Nicolas Jackson rattled the post midway through the first half after bursting through the French defence, while Ismaïla Sarr squandered a glorious opportunity shortly before the interval when he failed to hit the target from close range.

France struggled to find rhythm against a disciplined Senegalese side marshalled by captain Kalidou Koulibaly, and the African representatives left the field at halftime wondering how they had not capitalised on their dominance.

The turning point arrived in the 66th minute. Michael Olise threaded a perfectly weighted pass behind the Senegal defence and Mbappé raced through before calmly finishing past Édouard Mendy to break the deadlock. The goal carried added significance as it moved the French captain past Olivier Giroud to become France’s outright all-time leading scorer.

Senegal attempted to respond but France’s superior attacking depth eventually proved decisive. Eight minutes from time, substitute Bradley Barcola doubled the advantage with a composed finish after being released by Adrien Rabiot, seemingly putting the contest beyond reach.

The drama was not over. Deep into stoppage time, teenager Ibrahim Mbaye capitalised on a defensive lapse to pull one back for Senegal and briefly ignite hopes of a remarkable comeback. Those hopes lasted barely a minute.

Mbappé delivered the final word with a stunning strike in the sixth minute of added time, restoring France’s two-goal cushion and sealing a 3-1 victory that underlined both his enduring brilliance and France’s status among the tournament favourites.

For Senegal, the defeat will sting. Pape Thiaw’s side matched France for long periods and created enough chances to leave with at least a point. Their inability to convert those opportunities ultimately proved costly against a team blessed with world-class finishing power.

France now sit atop Group I and will carry momentum into their next fixture against Iraq, while Senegal must quickly regroup ahead of a crucial meeting with Norway as they seek to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.
