Official: Senegal vs. CAF Legal Battle Reaches CAS

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed today, March 25, 2026, that the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has officially filed an appeal against the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to strip the Teranga Lions of their continental title.

The appeal, formally registered this morning, marks an escalation in a dispute that has left African football in a state of flux.

The FSF’s legal challenge is multifaceted, primarily seeking to set aside the CAF decision entirely while simultaneously demanding that the court declare the federation the rightful winners of the tournament. The Senegalese federation has also requested an immediate suspension of the deadline to submit their full appeal brief. They argue that they cannot properly defend their position or address the specific allegations until CAF provides the full grounds—the detailed legal reasoning—behind the initial decision to revoke the trophy.

The dispute now enters a structured legal phase where the first priority is the appointment of a CAS Arbitral Panel to preside over the case. Once this panel is established, a formal procedural calendar will be created to dictate the timeline for hearings and evidence submission. This process will ultimately culminate in a final, binding ruling issued after all involved parties have been given the opportunity to be heard.

“CAS is perfectly equipped to resolve this type of dispute, with the assistance of expert and independent arbitrators,” said Matthieu Reeb, CAS Director General. “We understand that teams and fans are eager to know the final decision, and we will ensure that arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible.”

While the specific reasons for CAF’s original decision to strip Senegal of the title remain a subject of intense speculation, the FSF’s swift move to Lausanne only means confidence in the legality of their victory.

Reeb emphasized that while speed is a priority, the court will not sacrifice a fair hearing for the sake of a quick result.
