Moumbagna scores Marseilles’ 5th in win over Clermont Foot
Cameroonian international forward, Faris Moumbagna scored the fifth for Marseille in an emphatic Ligue 1 win over Clermont Foot on Saturday.
Olympique de Marseille won their third straight game in all competitions under new manager Jean-Louis Gasset in a 5-1 road victory over Clermont Foot on Saturday night at the Stade Gabriel-Montpied.
Marseille had the upper hand in the first 45 minutes over Clermont Foot. With a total of eight shots, OM asserted their offensive prowess, and Iliman Ndiaye broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, marking his second consecutive match with a goal.
OM held a narrow 1-0 advantage at halftime, but their lead evaporated early in the second half. Clermont emerged with determination after the break, and their efforts paid off when Bilal Boutobba found the net in the 53rd minute, leveling the score.
The home side had snatched momentum from Gasset and his team, but Marseille would quickly respond. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave OM the lead six minutes after Clermont scored, marking his third straight game with a goal in all competitions.
For Marseille, conceding a goal was a lesson learned and served as a valuable wakeup call, as they further solidified their position, building a 3-1 lead as Jonathan Clauss scored for Les Phocéens in the 67th minute.
With the outcome already determined, Marseille added another goal thanks to Luis Henrique, who scored his first-ever Ligue 1 goal as the Brazilian’s lone previous goal with OM came in the Coupe de France. The scoring didn’t stop there, as Faris Moumbagna added a fifth for a lopsided win.
OM will now turn their attention to the UEFA Europa League and the first leg of their Round of 16 tie against Spanish side Villarreal CF on Thursday at the Stade Vélodrome.
Clermont Foot continues to occupy the bottom position and now face a pivotal away fixture against FC Metz at the Stade Saint-Symphorien next weekend. A victory for Clermont Foot would inject much-needed optimism into their fight against relegation while a defeat against Metz would significantly diminish their prospects of staying in Ligue 1.
