CAF fines NOT GUILTY Eto’o
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made public its decision concerning the President of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o, following disciplinary investigations opened in the summer of 2023.
Samuel Eto’o faced charges of alleged match manipulation and violation of the principles of ethics and integrity. After the hearing of the EX Barca forward on June 25 at CAF headquarters in Cairo, the Disciplinary Commission of the body concluded that: “as it stands, there was not enough evidence to find Mr. Samuel Eto’o Fils and Mr. Valentin Nkwain guilty of match fixing.
Valentin Nkwain, the club president of Victoria United, had been accused of having been favored by Eto’o for his club to reach the Cameroonian 1st division following the leak of a telephone recording attributed to the two men.
On the other hand, the star does not escape punishment in the second part of the case. The Disciplinary Commission determined that Eto’o “seriously violated the principles of ethics, integrity and sportsmanship provided for in Article 2, paragraph 3 of the CAF Statutes”, for having been hired as an ambassador for sports betting company 1XBET in exchange for compensation.
As a result, Eto’o was fined $200,000 (around 185,000 euros). Suffice to say that Eto’o can clearly breathe, this financial sanction not being likely to worry him.
“The Disciplinary Commission determined that Eto’o “seriously violated the principles of ethics, integrity and sportsmanship as in Article 2, paragraph 3 of the CAF Statutes”, for having hired as an ambassador for sports betting company 1XBET in exchange for compensation,” a CAF statement reads.
