CAF CC: Enyimba’s chances fade away with latest draw against Al Masry

Enyimba’s chances of making it into the next round of this season’s CAF Confederation Cup are fast fading away following their 1-1 draw at home against Egyptian side Al Masry on Sunday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The People’s Elephants needed a win in the penultimate group game to brighten their chances of qualifying for the next round, but they started on the back foot as the visiting team opened the scoring as early as the 8th minute courtesy of a fine strike by Mohamed Hashem.

Al Masry had won a corner kick, which was quickly taken with a short pass before the ball was flicked into the area, with Hashem unmarked.

Stanley Eguma’s side threw everything at their visitors in search of the equaliser but they couldn’t find a leveller until after the break.

Two minutes after the restart, Ifeanyi Ihemekwele restored parity for Enyimba with his second consecutive goal in the competition.

Eguma threw 2013 AFCON winner, Brown Ideye into the fray in the 58th minute, but the experienced forward, who scored during their win over Black Bulls couldn’t find the winner either.

The visitors had a chance to take the lead in the 68th minute but Super Eagles B goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena denied Al Masry from the spot.

thanks to the draw, Enyimba remained third in the CAF Confederation Group D with five points.

To advance, they need a win against leaders Zamalek, who have nothing to play for in their last game in Egypt next Sunday, just as Black Bulls must beat Al Masry at home in Egypt.
