FEMAFOOT shortlists five candidates for Mali national team job
The Malian Football Federation has officially narrowed its search for a new national team coach to five candidates, following an extensive review process conducted by a specially appointed commission.
In a statement released on Tuesday, FEMAFOOT confirmed that the ad hoc commission tasked with examining applications for the position began its work on May 13, 2026, as Mali intensifies preparations for upcoming international competitions.
According to the federation, a total of 28 applications were carefully reviewed, with emphasis placed on coaching qualifications, managerial experience, and each candidate’s sporting project and technical vision for the national team.
The federation revealed that possession of a CAF Pro Licence, UEFA Pro Licence, or equivalent certification formed a key part of the selection criteria.
After an initial screening process reduced the list to 11 candidates, the commission eventually settled on a final shortlist of five coaches considered best suited to lead the Eagles.
Among the shortlisted names is experienced Congolese tactician Jean-Florent Ibenge, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished coaches after successful spells with the DR Congo national football team and several club sides on the continent.
Former Mali coach Mohamed Magassouba has also made the final cut, alongside Moroccan coaching legend Badou Zaki.
The shortlist is completed by Portuguese coaches António Conceição and Anthony Da Silva.
FEMAFOOT stated that all five candidates will now undergo further interviews with the commission before a final recommendation is submitted to the federation’s Executive Committee (COMEX) no later than May 24, 2026.
The federation added that the final appointment will be made in line with principles of transparency, credibility, and performance as Mali seeks the right profile to guide the national team into a new era.
