Victoria United Title-Winning Coach Dimitar Pantev Set to Join Simba SC as Head Coach
Tanzanian football giants Simba SC will officially announce the appointment of Bulgarian tactician Dimitar Nikolaev Pantev as their new head coach, succeeding Fadlu Davids on Saturday, according to sportglitz sources.
The move is a desperate statement of intent from the Msimbazi Reds, who are looking to arrest a significant decline in domestic form that has seen them endure a trophy drought and, more painfully, fall to the dominance of bitter rivals Young Africans SC (Yanga).
The 49-year-old Pantev has put pen to paper on a two-year contract that will keep him in Dar es Salaam until June 2027. His arrival comes after Simba SC paid a compensation fee to his previous club, Botswana Premier League champions Gaborone United, to facilitate his release. Pantev is scheduled to arrive in Dar es Salaam on Friday, ready to begin his new challenge.
A Proven Winner to End the Drought
The pressure on Pantev is immense. Simba SC, once the undisputed kings of Tanzanian football with a historic run of four consecutive league titles between 2017 and 2021, have now gone multiple seasons without winning the Premier League title, which has been consistently claimed by their arch-rivals, Yanga.
The rivalry, known as the Kariakoo Derby, has become particularly one-sided in recent times, with Yanga asserting a worrying dominance over the Reds. Pantev’s primary mandate is clear: to stop the bleeding against their sworn enemies and reclaim domestic silverware.
His resume, therefore, is a beacon of hope for the frustrated Simba faithful, showcasing a penchant for success in challenging environments:
Elite One (Cameroon): He led Victoria United to their historic first-ever top-flight league title.
Botswana Premier League: He clinched the league title with Gaborone United in the recently concluded season.
This track record of winning domestic silverware makes him a compelling choice for a club under intense pressure to reclaim dominance both in Tanzania and on the continental stage.
Technical Team and Future Plans
The new coach will bring an assistant coach with him. Crucially, the club has decided to retain most of the existing technical staff, whose contracts are set to expire in June. This arrangement gives Pantev the opportunity to assess the current personnel and decide who will form his long-term backroom team beyond the end of the current season.
Simba SC fans will be eager to see how the highly-touted Bulgarian manager, known for his ability to build title-winning sides, will fare in the highly competitive Tanzanian Premier League and, more importantly, in the CAF Champions League. The question on every fan’s mind is whether Pantev is the man to break Yanga’s current stranglehold on Tanzanian football.
