FECOFA Elections: Only Three Candidates Cleared as Electoral Commission Cuts Field
The electoral race for the presidency of the FECOFA has taken a dramatic turn after the federation’s electoral commission validated just three of the nine submitted candidacies.
In a decision that has already sparked debate across Congolese football circles, the commission approved the lists of Véron Mosengo-Omba, Bosco Muehu, and Jean-Didier Massamba. Their validation, while largely anticipated by insiders, effectively narrows the contest to a three-horse race ahead of the decisive vote.
However, the exclusion of six other candidates has become the major talking point. Among those deemed ineligible are notable names such as Shabani Nonda and Aziz Makukula, both of whom had generated significant interest in the buildup to the elections. The reasons for the invalidations have not been fully detailed publicly, but such decisions typically relate to administrative or eligibility requirements outlined in the federation’s statutes.
The development raises fresh questions about transparency and governance within Congolese football, an ecosystem that has often been under scrutiny in recent years. For many observers, the trimming of the candidate list could either streamline the process or deepen concerns about inclusivity and fairness.
Despite the setback, the door is not entirely closed for the disqualified candidates. FECOFA’s electoral framework allows any rejected list to appeal before the appropriate review body. This appeals process is expected to be closely watched, as it could potentially reshape the final lineup before election day.
All eyes now turn to May 20, when the federation is scheduled to elect its next leadership. With only three candidates currently in the race, the stakes have intensified, and the outcome could play a crucial role in defining the future direction of football in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As the countdown begins, the focus will be on whether the process itself can command the confidence of stakeholders in Congolese football.
