African football giants Al Ahly SC have officially ushered in a new era, announcing the appointment of Danish tactician Jess Thorup as the club’s new head coach. The highly-rated 55-year-old succeeds José Riveiro, who was dismissed several weeks ago, and now takes charge of one of the most decorated clubs in world football, known to its fervent supporters as the “Red Fortress.”
Thorup arrives with a reputation as a proven leader, having found success in multiple leagues across Europe. His coaching resume includes significant stints where he secured two Danish Superliga titles—with FC Midtjylland in 2017 and FC Copenhagen in the 2021-22 season—alongside time in the Belgian Pro League with Gent and Genk, and most recently, in the German Bundesliga with FC Augsburg. He also famously led Denmark’s Under-21 national team to the UEFA European Championship semi-finals and qualification for the Olympic Games.

The transition to Cairo comes with a significant financial incentive, making the move one of the most high-profile coaching appointments in African football history. Thorup has agreed to a two-and-a-half-year contract, with reports indicating a total earnings package of approximately $9 million. This lucrative deal is set to establish him as the highest-paid Danish coach ever, a clear signal of Al Ahly’s ambition and the value they place on his experience and proven track record.
The move follows a thorough consultation process by the club’s board and planning committee. Thorup’s appointment is seen as the decisive step needed to build on the momentum recently established by interim coach Emad El Nahas, who had steadied the ship following an inconsistent start to the season.
