Diarra’s Strike Propels Espérance Past Simba SC

Espérance de Tunis finally found their rhythm in the CAF Champions League group stage, securing a 1-0 victory over Tanzanian giants Simba SC at the Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi on Saturday evening. After a frustrated start to the campaign involving two consecutive draws, the Blood and Gold entered the match under significant pressure to perform. They ultimately did not disappoint their home crowd, delivering a  sound performance that shifts the momentum of Group D in their favor.

The game’s defining moment arrived early in the first half when Burkinabe forward Jack Diarra capitalized on a pinpoint assist from Amine Ben Hamida. In the 21st minute, Diarra’s clinical finish sent the home fans into a frenzy and provided the tactical cushion the Tunisians needed to manage the remainder of the contest. While Espérance dominated much of the proceedings, they were occasionally profligate in front of goal, missing several clear-cut opportunities to double their advantage. However, their defensive line remained resolute against a Simba side that struggled to find a clinical edge in the final third.

This victory catapults Espérance de Tunis to the top of Group D with five points, marking their first win of the group stage and providing much-needed breathing room ahead of the return fixtures. Conversely, the “Msimbazi Reds” remain rooted to the bottom of the table with zero points from three matches, leaving their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals hanging by a thread. Simba SC will now look for revenge when they host the return leg in Dar es Salaam on February 1, 2026, while Espérance focuses on maintaining their leadership in a highly competitive group.
