Veron’s Vow: “I Will Transform FECOFA into Paradise”

The former CAF General Secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba recently addressed the rumors regarding a potential run for the presidency of the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) on France 24, a body currently going through a complex stabilization process. While Mosengo has chosed to keep his cards close to his chest, his ambition remains undeniable.

“If the conditions are right and I decide to stand, I will transform that federation into a paradise,” Mosengo-Omba stated, signaling a bold confidence in his ability to overhaul the nation’s footballing landscape.

A Federation in Turmoil

The “paradise” Mosengo-Omba speaks of is currently far from reality. FECOFA has been mired in significant administrative and structural instability for years, leading to the installation of a FIFA-mandated Normalization Committee to steer the ship towards fresh elections. This instability is rooted in deep-seated issues, beginning with infrastructure deficits where a lack of modern facilities has consistently hindered domestic league growth and youth development.

Furthermore, the federation has long battled financial instability, where mismanagement and a lack of transparency have left the body struggling to fund its various programs effectively. These administrative failures have trickled down to the pitch, resulting in the stagnation of the domestic league, Linafoot, which has faced repeated disruptions that negatively impacted player fitness and the overall quality of the local game.

The timing of a potential administrative reset is important. With the current crop of Leopards having successfully secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 52 years, there is a palpable sense of momentum. However, history has shown that talent on the pitch can only take a nation so far without a robust backbone. A modernized administrative structure would serve as the ultimate force multiplier in this regard.

The Presidential “Call to Service”

The narrative surrounding Mosengo-Omba’s candidacy gained weight during a recent CAF Executive Committee meeting in Cairo. CAF President Patrice Motsepe shared an intriguing anecdote, noting that Veron had visited him in South Africa to discuss his future. According to Motsepe, President Félix Tshisekedi himself expressed a desire for Mosengo-Omba to bring his international expertise back home to serve his country, framing a potential run as a matter of national service.

Should he decide to run, Mosengo-Omba will face a field of ambitious contenders who have already signaled their intent to lead FECOFA. Among those who have made their ambitions known are Jean-Max Mayaka, a well-known figure in the Congolese sporting world, and Amos Mbayo, the former sports minister and former FECOFA head who is looking to regain his influence. Additionally, Eddy Ngoy has emerged as another prominent voice advocating for reform and seeking the top seat within the federation.

Despite the competition, Mosengo-Omba’s resume makes him arguably the most potent candidate in the race. His tenure as the General Secretary of CAF gave him a unique perspective on football governance at the highest level, where he managed 54 member associations and oversaw major continental tournaments. His background is further bolstered by his extensive FIFA-level experience; having worked closely with Gianni Infantino’s administration, he possesses a deep understanding of global standards for compliance and development.
