Brazil and Morocco Share Spoils After Saibari and Vinicius Trade Stunners

Ismael Saibari produced a moment of pure class and Vinicius Junior responded with individual brilliance as Morocco and Brazil played out a 1-1 draw in their opening Group C match at the FIFA World Cup this Saturday, East Rutherford, New Jersey .

Morocco, whose confidence has continued to grow since their run at the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, showed little respect for Brazil’s reputation and deservedly took the lead midway through the first half through Saibari.

The PSV Eindhoven midfielder latched onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Brahim Diaz before delicately chipping goalkeeper Alisson Becker, capping a flowing Moroccan move with a cheeky chip that stunned the five-time world champions. It just shows why Bayern Munich have doubled efforts to get the 25-year-old.

The goal was totally against the run of play but came at the right time for Mohamed Ouahbi’s side, who looked more dangerous and purposeful than Brazil in the final third.

Brazil struggled to create clear opportunities until Vinicius produced a moment of magic in the 32nd minute.

Having received the ball on the left wing, the Real Madrid star drove at the Moroccan defence, skipped past his marker and cut inside before curling beyond Yassine Bounou to restore parity.

The equaliser shifted momentum towards Brazil again, though Morocco continued to threaten and refused to retreat into a defensive shell.

Both teams created opportunities after the interval in an entertaining contest played at a high tempo. Morocco looked particularly dangerous on the counterattack through Diaz and Saibari, while Brazil attempted to increase the pressure through Vinicius, though they found it difficult to create clear cut chances.

Bounou was called upon several times to preserve Morocco’s lead, while Alisson also had to remain alert as the Atlas Lions searched for a winner.

Neither side managed to find a decider, leaving the teams with a point each in what could prove a crucial result in the race for qualification from Group C.

The draw continues Brazil’s recent difficulties against African opponents. The Selecao were beaten by Morocco in a friendly in 2023 and once again found themselves unable to overcome the North Africans despite boasting one of the tournament’s most talented squads.

This result leaves Group C finely balanced ahead of the remaining fixtures, with Morocco next facing Scotland while Brazil take on Haiti.
