Côte d’Ivoire Throw Away One-Goal Lead as Germany Stage Late World Cup Comeback for 2-1 win

For more than an hour, Côte d’Ivoire looked on course for 6 points in the FIFA World Cup. However, by the end of the game, the Elephants were left empty-handed after surrendering a precious 1-0 advantage in a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat.

Franck Kessié’s predatory finish in the 30th minute rewarded an outstanding first-half display. Germany struggled to cope with the pace of Amad Diallo and the direct running of Yan Diomandé, while Yahia Fofana inspired confidence with a string of composed saves behind a disciplined defence.

The Ivorians entered the second half knowing another 45 minutes would secure a famous victory and place them on the brink of the Round of 32. Instead, Germany’s superior squad depth proved decisive.

Julian Nagelsmann transformed the contest with a series of substitutions, introducing Deniz Undav and Nadiem Amiri just after the hour mark. The changes injected fresh energy into a previously blunt German attack. Undav rewarded his coach almost immediately, volleying home Amiri’s cross in the 68th minute to finally break Ivorian resistance.

Even then, Côte d’Ivoire still had opportunities to reclaim control. Simon Adingra passed up a golden chance on the counterattack after Nicolas Pépé’s inviting square ball, hesitating instead of shooting first time. It was the moment that would haunt the West Africans.

As Germany poured forward in stoppage time, Undav struck again. Felix Nmecha threaded a clever pass into the substitute, who spun brilliantly before firing beyond Fofana in the 94th minute to complete a devastating comeback and secure Germany’s place in the knockout stage.

For Emerse Faé’s men, the defeat will sting for a long time. They had matched Germany physically and tactically for most of the evening, only to see concentration, fatigue and missed opportunities undo an otherwise heroic performance.

Rather than celebrating a famous scalp, Côte d’Ivoire now face a must-win final group match against Curaçao, knowing they let a priceless victory slip through their fingers in one of the cruellest endings of the tournament so far.
