England Overcome DR Congo Scare to Reach Last 16

England narrowly avoided one of the great upsets in modern World Cup history, relying on a dramatic late double from captain Harry Kane to claim a 2-1 victory over a spirited Democratic Republic of Congo side at the Atlanta Stadium.

The Round of 32 clash was tipped to be a straightforward affair for Thomas Tuchel’s side, but the Congolese Leopards tore up the script early on, leaving the Three Lions chasing the game for more than an hour.

DR Congo, playing in their first-ever World Cup knockout match, started with zero fear. In just the 7th minute, winger Brian Cipenga stunned the favorites. Seizing on a rapid counter-attack that exposed England’s flanks, Cipenga unleashed a sharp strike that caught goalkeeper Jordan Pickford off guard at his near post, sending the Congolese fans into absolute delirium.

For the remainder of the first half, England looked visibly rattled. Under Tuchel, the team had breezed through Group L, but they struggled significantly to break down DR Congo’s incredibly organized, low defensive block. Jude Bellingham picked up a frustrated yellow card in the 18th minute, symbolizing a stagnant first half for the Three Lions where decisions were overthought and passing lanes were tightly closed.

With an ignominious World Cup exit staring him in the face, Thomas Tuchel turned to his bench on the hour mark. Looking for energy and directness, he subbed off wingers Marcus Rashford and Noni Madueke, introducing Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka. Moments later, Eberechi Eze was brought on for Djed Spence to provide more creative impetus.

The changes completely altered the momentum. As the humidity took its toll and the Congolese legs began to tire from their monumental defensive effort, England pinned the African nation firmly into their own penalty box.

The relentless pressure finally cracked the Congolese resistance in the 75th minute. An in-swinging cross found Harry Kane, who steered a powerful header past goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi to relieve the mounting tension.

With extra time looming, England refused to take their foot off the gas. In the 86th minute, the turnaround was complete. Kane found space inside the area and rifled a fierce, clinical shot into the roof of the net, sealing his brace and his place as the evening’s definitive hero.

“It ramps up now, doesn’t it? Everyone knows the pressure of it, and I think that is where you will see us thrive,” goalkeeper Jordan Pickford noted ahead of the knockout phase. True to his word, the veteran squad kept their heads when it mattered most.

While it was far from the perfect performance, England showed the grit of potential champions to survive and advance. For DR Congo, the night ended in heartbreak, but they exit the tournament with their heads held high after a historic run and a performance that pushed one of football’s heavyweights to the absolute limit.

England now march on to the Round of 16, where they will travel to the Mexico City Stadium on July 5 to face the winner of the upcoming Mexico vs. Ecuador fixture.
