Cape Verde Makes World Cup History as Smallest Nation Ever to Reach Knockout Stage

After holding Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw on Saturday morning, and with Spain defeating Uruguay 1-0 thanks to Alex Baena’s decisive 42nd-minute strike, the Blue Sharks secured second place in Group H and became the smallest nation by population ever to advance from the group stage of a FIFA World Cup. They do so with a population of approximately approximately 529,700 people.

For a country of barely half a million inhabitants making its first-ever World Cup appearance, simply reaching the tournament was already a huge achievement. But under the guidance of head coach Bubista, Cape Verde have rewritten expectations, navigating a difficult group containing European giants Spain, two-time world champions Uruguay, and seasoned World Cup participants Saudi Arabia.

The foundation of their qualification campaign was laid on matchday one, when Bubista’s side stunned European champions Spain, to a 0-0 draw. Against one of the tournament favourites, Cape Verde showed maturity, and a fearlessness that immediately announced their arrival on the biggest stage.

They followed that up with perhaps an even more impressive performance against Uruguay. Twice falling behind, the Blue Sharks refused to surrender, battling back on each occasion to secure a thrilling 2-2 draw and keep their knockout hopes firmly alive.

That set the stage for a nervy final-day encounter against Saudi Arabia. Knowing that matching or bettering Uruguay’s result against Spain would send them through, Cape Verde held their nerve. While chances came and went, they were composed throughout the 90 minutes, securing the point they needed as Spain’s victory over Uruguay confirmed their place in the Round of 32.

Up next for Cape Verde will be Leonel Messi’s Argentina if something doesn’t go horribly wrong in group J.
