SOUTH AFRICAN FOOTBALL MOURNS THE PASSING OF JAYDEN ADAMS

There’s shock and grief following the sudden passing of  Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed this Saturday, July 11, 2026, by the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), alongside the player’s representatives and his guardian. While the exact details and cause of death have not yet been made public, his family and club have urgently appealed for privacy as they come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

What makes the tragedy even more painful for the football fraternity is its timing. Just weeks ago, Adams was carrying the aspirations of a nation on football’s grandest platform, representing South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Under the guidance of Hugo Broos, the  midfielder featured in all three of South Africa’s intense Group A fixtures. His tactical discipline, composure under pressure, and work rate on the pitch helped Bafana Bafana navigate a challenging group to showcase South African talent to the world. It was a tournament meant to signal his definitive arrival on the international stage, establishing him as a cornerstone for the national team’s future transition.

Tragically, local media also revealed that Adams’ grandmother passed away during Bafana Bafana’s  World Cup campaign, compounding a period of immense emotional weight for the young athlete and his loved ones.

The suddenness of his death has left those closest to him reeling. Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Adams’ long-time mentor, Brendine Johnson, gave voice to the overwhelming grief gripping his inner circle: “At this moment, things are still raw. The family wouldn’t want to be contacted right now; they wouldn’t be able to answer anyone. This passing has ripped everybody apart. Returning from the World Cup just now and then receiving such news.

Born in 2001, Adams rose to prominence through a stellar, breakout tenure at Stellenbosch FC, where his dynamism and technical excellence quickly identified him as one of the most complete young midfielders in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). His elite ceiling earned him a high-profile move to domestic giants Mamelodi Sundowns, where he integrated seamlessly into a squad chasing both domestic dominance and continental glory in the CAF Champions League.

Beyond his club exploits, Adams earned nine senior caps for Bafana Bafana, scoring one goal. He was notably part of the heroic squad that secured a historic bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, a feat that restored South Africa to the upper echelons of continental football.

In a formal statement, SAFPU paid tribute to his character both on and off the pitch, describing his passing as an “immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity, and the country at large,” while praising the humility and intense pride with which he always donned the national colors.

As tributes continue to pour in from teammates, rival clubs, and supporters across Africa and the world, the continent remembers a bright, humble talent whose journey was tragically cut short just as he was stepping into his prime.
